President Benson gave this talk in 1973. He gave his thoughts straight and spoke from his heart. If he were alive to give this talk today, I think he would be called inflammatory.
His theme is a call to stand up. That it was (and still is) time to open our mouths and offer the truth that we know through the power of the Holy Spirit. It’s time to remember that, no matter what is popular or politically correct, the Lord expects us to share the truth in whatever place we may be.
President Benson reminds us that this is our duty, not a road to popularity. The Lord’s prophets have been persecuted throughout the centuries because they have tried to warn people who became angry when confronted with the truth. We should expect no different, but that is not a good excuse for backing down.
The most-bone chilling part of this talk is his description of the fall of the Roman Empire. True to his own call to be a watchman on the tower, he warned us of what would happen if we didn’t speak up. He nailed what is happening in the United States of America today.
To me, even knowing that we have fulfilled this prophecy is no excuse to refrain from speaking truth. We are still here. The church is still on the earth. The Lord is still doing his work, and we are called to help him.
